Kidepo Valley National Park

Murchison

Overview & Unique Value

Located in the remote Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park is a massive 1,442 km² of stunning, rugged wilderness, featuring rolling savannah and dry river valleys framed by distant mountains, which CNN Travel famously dubbed “possibly the most picturesque park in Africa.” Its isolation means it is one of the least-visited and most untouched safari destinations.

Wildlife & Flora Deep Dive

  • The Cheetah’s Domain: Kidepo is one of the few places in Uganda to see the Cheetah in its natural habitat, which is well-suited to the open savannah landscape.
  • Endemic Wildlife: The park is home to 28 mammal species that are found only in the Karamoja region within Uganda, including the Bat-eared Fox, Caracal, Aardwolf, and Greater Kudu.
  • Birding Specials: With over 470 species, it’s a birder’s paradise for savannah species. It is the only place in Uganda to easily see the Common Ostrich (native to the area) and numerous raptors like the Secretary Bird and various vultures.
  • Key Water Sources: The Narus Valley is the primary game viewing area because the Narus River has permanent water that attracts large concentrations of animals, especially during the dry season, in contrast to the seasonal Kidepo River.

Activities & Experience Focus

  • Prisitine Game Drives: Due to its low visitor numbers, game drives offer a true sense of African solitude and untouched wilderness. Night game drives are available here to spot nocturnal predators.
  • Mount Morungole: Hikers can climb Mount Morungole (2,750m) which forms the boundary of the park, offering spectacular views and a chance to interact with the I’K People, one of the smallest and most secluded ethnic groups in Uganda who live on the mountain slopes.
  • Cultural Visits: Interact with the Karamojong pastoralist communities to learn about their semi-nomadic lifestyle, similar to the Maasai, which is centered around cattle.

Travel Tips & Logistics

  • Best for Solitude: Kidepo is an ideal destination for adventurous travelers seeking an authentic, uncrowded safari experience away from main tourist routes.
  • Access: While accessible by road (a very long, challenging drive from Kampala), flying in is a popular option.
