Kibale National Park, covering 766 km² in western Uganda, is globally renowned as the “Primate Capital of the World.” It is one of East Africa’s last significant expanses of both lowland and montane tropical rainforest and is essentially a crucial forest island in a highly populated agricultural region, making its conservation efforts vital. The park is a major water catchment area, protecting the Dura and Mpanga Rivers.

Wildlife & Flora Deep Dive

  • 13 Primate Species: Kibale boasts the highest density and diversity of primates in all of Africa, with 13 species recorded.
  • Chimpanzee Stronghold: It protects one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in East Africa, making it the premier location for chimpanzee trekking. Habituation here began decades ago and is a major success story.
  • Unique Primates: Notable species include the rare Red Colobus Monkey and the endangered L’Hoest’s Monkey and Blue Monkey.
  • The Bigodi Wetlands: Located just outside the park, the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community-run conservation success story, protecting a vital swamp habitat that is excellent for rare birds, monkeys, and the elusive Sitatunga antelope.

  • Chimpanzee Trekking: The core activity, offering up to one hour with a habituated chimpanzee community.
  • Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX): Similar to the gorilla GHE, this allows visitors to spend a full day with researchers, following the chimpanzees from dawn until they make their nests in the evening.
  • Conservation and Community: The park actively shares a percentage of its revenue with local communities, supporting development projects like health clinics and schools, which helps mitigate human-wildlife conflict and ensures local support for conservation.
