Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Akagera National Park & Boat Safari

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet your Altric Africar Safaris driver-guide and begin your scenic drive to Akagera National Park (approximately 2.5 hours). In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari on Lake Ihema, where you’ll spot hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species, including fish eagles and kingfishers.

Day 2: Game Drives & Big Five Tracking in Akagera

Start the day with an early morning game drive through the park’s rolling savannah. Look out for elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and the recently reintroduced rhinos. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and continue exploring before returning to your lodge for relaxation and a sunset view over the plains.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park & Optional Cultural Tour

After breakfast, drive north to Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
In the afternoon, choose between a cultural tour at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village or a hike to Dian Fossey’s tomb, learning about her work in gorilla conservation.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking Experience – Return to Kigali & Departure

After an early breakfast, proceed to the park headquarters for a briefing before starting your gorilla trek. Accompanied by experienced rangers, hike through the lush rainforest to meet a gorilla family and spend an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. After the trek, transfer back to Kigali, enjoy a short city tour or visit the Genocide Memorial, then transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
